Job Requirements


High School Grad / GED:
High School graduation or equivalent or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.

License and Certifications:

·       Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Idaho driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Out-of-state hires will be given appropriate time to obtain a valid Idaho driver's license. A valid license must be maintained throughout the length of employment with the Districts.

·       Must possess a valid National Registry and/or Idaho State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License. A valid certification must be maintained throughout the length of employment.



Examples of Duties :
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

·       Performs full range of fire safety activities, including placing fire hoses, setting ladders, operating fire streams, and other Fire Department equipment, ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims.

·       Conducts and performs rescue, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, and clean-up activities at fire scene.

·       Administers emergency aid and assists in emergency incidents.

·       Performs basic fire prevention, inspection, and code enforcement duties, including life safety inspections.

·       Performs support and maintenance activities such as servicing fire hydrants, fire equipment and repairs.

·       Keeps abreast of current firefighting methods and operations and departmental policies and procedures, which may include but not limited to fire procedural manuals involving fire codes and emergency response guide (ERG).

·       Conducts public education and information activities including assisting in the preparation and dissemination of informational materials and making presentations.

·       Perform fire apparatus or other fire related equipment repair and maintenance.



Knowledge of:

·       Procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting, emergency medical, and other response operations.

·       Operational characteristics of emergency response vehicles, fire suppression apparatus and equipment.

·       Principles and practices of basic firefighting activities, firefighting methods, fire prevention, fire inspection and emergency medical procedures.

·       Overhaul and salvage operations.

·       Basic equipment and tools related to fire operations.



Skills and Ability to:

·       Be trained, instructed, and supervised in all aspects of firefighting, fire prevention, fire inspection, emergency medical procedures, and related activities.

·       Operate heavy machinery and firefighting equipment. Function effectively in emergency situations.

·       Perform a wide variety of strenuous fire suppression activities, including hazardous material incidents.

·       Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.

·       Observing and following safe work practices. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

·       Operate basic modern office equipment, including personal computers.

·       Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all levels of District employees, community organizations, and the public.



SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear; both in person and by telephone; use hands to, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is expected to perform on-site field inspections including exertion of a moderate amount of physical effort to climb or scale walls, ladders or steps, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, squat or crawl, as well as walk, sit, and run to perform various firefighting/rescue duties. Sensory demands include talking, hearing, vision, and using smell. These positions require the physical strength to operate heavy equipment including firefighting apparatus and rescue equipment and lift and carry people of varying sizes and weights (up to 100 pounds or more) in emergency situations and administer first aid.

Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; verbal skills to be understood orally and in person, on the telephone, or on the radio; hearing adequate to hear and respond to instructions both in person and on the radio; vision to properly operate equipment and perform firefighting and rescue operations; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; remain calm and use effective judgment in dangerous situations; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines, and interact with citizens, business representatives, District staff, other organizations, fire personnel, and the public, and others encountered in the course of work.

Work Environment:
The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, and in a fire apparatus or other fire unit and may operate specialized equipment when assigned to fire station. The work involves exposure to extreme heat, smoke, dust, fumes, and inclement weather, as well as loud noises such as, but not limited to, sirens, alarms, and diesel engines. These positions require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as certification in protective and lifesaving equipment. These positions are subject to the threat of injury and life-threatening hazards as part of fire operations.

Qualifications
