Position Summary

The Firefighter/EMT-B responds to fires, medical, rescue, hazardous material and other emergency and non-emergency events;

takes appropriate action to protect life, property and the environment; performs various staff support assignments in addition to

normal emergency response activities; performs related work as assigned.

This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.


Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar,

Responds to calls for medical aid, including traffic collisions and rescue situations. Provides pre-hospital care at the EMT-

basic or Advanced level, EMT level, including examining patients and monitoring vital signs, establishes I.V. lines,

administers medications, inserts airway, treat for medical or trauma issues, use of cardiac monitors; defibrillator, and takes

other basic and advanced first aid and life support actions; communicates with hospital and/or health care professionals in

person or by radio; completes require reports. Restocks supplies and maintains emergency vehicles and equipment in

proper working condition.

Maintains all current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and EMS licenses according to New Mexico rules and

standards.

In a fire emergency performs firefighting duties and responsibilities at the Firefighter II level; connects supply lines; controls

and extinguishes fires, using various size hand-lines, ladders, and portable water monitors; applies foam and chemicals for

fire suppression and control.

Searches buildings and rescues victims from building and motor vehicles, sometimes using specialized power and hand

tools; uses various hand and power tools to obtain entry to buildings, frees trapped accident victims and provides

ventilation.

Participates in specialized and technical rescue operations, including water, underground and confined space situations.

Responds to hazardous materials emergencies at the Operational or technician level.

Participates in clean-up, salvage and overhaul operations; cleans, services and ensures operational readiness of fire

vehicles, apparatus, hoses and equipment; and assists with the maintenance of station and facilities.

Participates in various staff support assignments including but not limited to: fire prevention, inspection, maintenance of

inventory records, scheduled inspections of department equipment and apparatus, and fire investigation.

Employs appropriate firefighting and chemical safety apparel and equipment, including turnout gear, helmets, hoods and

self-contained breathing apparatus.

Works with the community in a variety of educational, public relations and service programs; may provide CPR training

classes as assigned.

Consistently demonstrates the highest level of customer service during emergency and routine situations.

Serves as acting engineer; may direct the work of others, particularly in a Fire or medical emergency.

Prepares and submits various computerized fire and medical incident reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Skills: Knowledge: Principles and practices of emergency medical care at either the basic level; Principles and practices of fire suppression,

rescue, hazardous materials response and fire prevention at the Firefighter II level; Safety practices and precautions

pertaining to the work; Basic computer report production techniques.

Principles and practices of emergency response; Modern firefighting techniques, procedures, operation and maintenance of

various firefighting apparatus, tools and appliances; Applying pertinent laws, ordinances and regulations relating to fire

suppression, rescue, EMS, technical rescue and hazardous material response and relating to fire prevention; Office

procedures, methods and equipment, including computer technology required for job responsibilities; Assessing emergency

incidents, implementing appropriate response strategies and tactics; Maintaining accurate records, preparing clear and

concise reports using computer technology; Responding to requests and inquiries from the general public; Developing,

presenting and overseeing public education programs regarding fire safety and prevention; Operating a variety of tools,

equipment and apparatus used in fire, medical and other emergency response.

Abilities: Understand and follow oral as well as written directions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those

encountered in the course of the work; Remain calm, make sound decisions, and respond appropriately and safely during

emergency situations; Work shifts as structured by the Department; Work overtime as directed. Work harmoniously with a

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures

Physical Agility Test/Combat Challenge 
 
Aerial Ladder Climb 75ft at a 65 degree angle (not timed) 
  • Stair climb: The candidate will climb 4 stories with a 100 ft section of 1 ¾ in fire hose bundled in a high-rise pack.
  • Hose raise: the candidate will raise a section of 2 1/2 inch fire hose by rope hand over hand 4 stories (approx 45 ft).
  • Keiser Sled: The candidate will strike a 150 lb sled 5 ft with a 9 lb sledgehammer.
  • Charged line: The candidate will advance a charged 1 3/4 inch fire hose 100 ft.
  • Dummy Drag: The candidate will drag a 165lb dummy 100 ft.
