Firefighter Paramedic - $70,036.81 - $89,279.99

The primary function of the Firefighter Paramedic is to respond to fire, medical and other emergent and non-emergent alarms. Individuals in this position often perform under conditions that require strenuous physical exertion. Major elements of the Firefighter Paramedic’s job responsibilities include participation in supervised drills and training in firefighting and EMS skills. Other elements include routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus, routine care of buildings and grounds, as well as public education activities. On occasion, employees in this classification may be responsible for the management of company or District programs. In addition, employees may be required to initiate emergency mitigation until relieved of command by an officer of a higher rank.

  • Perform and provide comprehensive emergency and non-emergency medical care pursuant to level of state certification, providing care to ill and injured persons, and to persons who may pose health, blood, and airborne pathogenic risks. Required to wear bio-hazardous PPE, and required to participate in various community health care programs.
  • Provide patient care pursuant to level of state certification in a moving ambulance as the primary care provider while transporting to a medical facility.
  • Will serve as a preceptor to paramedic students once eligible.
  • Perform ePCR QA.
  • Perform firefighting tasks such as, but not limited to: hose-line operations, extensive crawling, lifting, pulling and carrying heavy objects 50 pounds or more for distances more than 20 feet, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry, salvage, and overhaul, and mitigate hazards involving poisonous reptiles, insects, and all other hazardous animals.
  • Perform fire and rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing PPE and SCBA, including working in extremely hot and/or cold environments for prolonged time periods.
  • Wear an SCBA, which includes a demand valve-type positive pressure face-piece or special filter masks, which require the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads.
  • Perform fire and rescue duties while being exposed to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) or non-biological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of PPE, including SCBA or HEPA filter mask.
  • Climb two or more flights of stairs while wearing a fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 pounds or more and carry equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 pounds
  • Wear a fire protective ensemble that is restricting, encapsulating, and insulated. This clothing will result in a significant fluid loss that frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate the core temperature to levels exceeding 102.2°F (32°C).
  • Search, find, and rescue victims by dragging or carrying, ranging from newborns up to adults, weighing over 200 pounds, to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility.
  • Advance water-filled hose-lines up to 3 inches in diameter from fire apparatus to an occupancy (sometimes more than 150 feet); can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
  • Climb ladders, operating from heights, walk or crawl in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operate in proximity of electrical power lines and/or other hazards, at heights or distances of ten feet or more.
  • Work under unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion, without the benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration.
  • Operate fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles during an emergency and non-emergency modes.
  • Utilize critical, time-sensitive, and complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments (including but not limited to hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces), further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
  • Effectively communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing PPE and SCBA under conditions of high background noise and poor visibility.
  • Function as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mission failure or in the risk of injury or death to civilians or team members.
  • Perform assigned fire inspections, participate in fire drills, conduct fire station facility tours, and provide basic information of Fire District activities to the public.
  • Train, read, and study assigned materials related to firefighting, prevention, hazardous materials, technical rescue, and emergency medical services.
  • Participate in consistent and efficient physical fitness programs and maintain specified fitness levels.
  •  Participate in the cleaning and maintenance of fire district facilities and perform other housekeeping duties.
  •  May be required to perform in a temporary 40-hr staff position.

Qualifications
Firefighter Paramedic
  • Arizona State Fire Fighter I and II certification.
  • Basic Wildland Firefighter certification.
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations Level certification.
  • Current State of Arizona Emergency Medical Care Technician-Paramedic.
  • Current Healthcare Provider level CPR certified.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Valid, unrestricted Arizona Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Completion of Basic Firefighter Task Book within the probationary year.
  • Completion of Fire Medic Task Book within the probationary year.
  • Completion of Support Vehicle Operator (SVO) part 1 within the probationary year.
  • Completion of Support Vehicle Operator (SVO) part 2 within twelve months of completing probation.
  • Completion of Advanced Firefighter task book within the first 24 months of employment. 
Firefighter EMT
  • Arizona State Fire Fighter I and II certification.
