GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DUTIES

 

These positions perform emergency medical services in response to calls; perform fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials and natural disaster operations and prevention duties; and cleans and maintains fire equipment and facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a shift supervisor.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel on department policies and practices.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities listed should not be construed to be all-inclusive. The essential job duties will include other responsibilities as assigned and required.

 

1.    Responds to emergency medical calls requiring a thorough understanding of emergency medical services. Operates equipment to provide rescue and emergency medical services following all protocols based on EMS certification as established for each situation.

2.    Responds to fire and other emergency calls which may include laying hose and connecting to hydrants; directing streams of water or chemicals onto fires; using ladders and fire suppression tools and equipment; ventilating structures; searching buildings; and rescuing individuals from buildings or other hazardous situations.

 

3.    Checks and maintains fire and EMS department apparatus, equipment and facilities, including routine housekeeping and maintenance duties.

4.    Trains and drills on fire, rescue, and emergency medical related subjects, techniques, and procedures.

5.    Follows all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.

2. Maintains proficiency and certifications by attending training conferences and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility.

Knowledge

  • Considerable knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles and practices; the operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; emergency medical response methods and procedures.
  • Learn various and numerous fire suppression and fire prevention methods, procedures, and techniques including the operation of firefighting equipment.
  • Accurately recall the street system pattern and physical design of the District upon completion of appropriate study.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, kneel, sit, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls. The position requires mobility and the ability to operate firefighting, rescue, and EMS equipment.  Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 30 pounds on a regular basis and will require moving adult individuals, fire hoses, and fire/rescue equipment, which will weigh over 100 pounds more than once per day. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as motor vehicles, and emergency medical, fire suppression and rescue equipment, etc.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Most work occurs under usual fire station/indoor working conditions. Approximately 40% of the work period is at medical/fire/rescue sites or training with exposure to fire, smoke, and typical hazards and noise levels associated with medical/fire/rescue service. The noise level in the fire station is higher than typical of most office environments; however does not require hearing protection. Position will be assigned to a schedule that is 24 hours on duty, followed by 72 hours off duty, then 48 hours on duty and 72 hours off duty (1-3, 2-3) and may be required to carry a pager during off duty hours.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • At least 18 years old.
  • U.S. Citizen or lawfully able to work in the U.S.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and speak English.
  • Current certification as a Paramedic. This can be satisfied by a certification as an Oregon Paramedic, or National Registry certification as a Paramedic and the ability to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity, or possession of EMT-P from another state and be able to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity; or possess the ability and qualifications to obtain an Oregon EMT-P by the date of hire.
  • Possession of Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Certification for Fire Fighter 1 or equivalent.
  • Possession of Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification within 6 months of hire date.
  • Possession of Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification within 6 months of hire date.
  • Possession of valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Pass a background check, physical, and psychological examination.
  • Vision: Per NFPA 1582 Requirements
  • Current CPAT

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Over two years’ experience in EMS, fire ground operations, rescue, hazmat, and fire prevention programs, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.
  • EVOC Training or NFPA Driver certification.
  • Hazardous material and biohazard handling training.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Completion of Associate's degree in Fire Science or related field.
  • Apparatus Operator certification.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).
  • Experience in Incident Command situations.
