Job Summary:

The Firefighter-Paramedic performs a dual role involving fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue operations, and public safety services. The incumbent is responsible for responding to a wide range of emergency calls including structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and natural disasters. As a licensed paramedic, the Firefighter-Paramedic provides advanced life support (ALS) and pre-hospital care to patients under emergency conditions.


Key Responsibilities:

Firefighting Duties:

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls involving fire, hazardous materials, and rescue situations.
  • Performs fire suppression operations including search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Operates and maintains firefighting apparatus, hoses, ladders, and related equipment.
  • Participates in fire drills, training sessions, and continuing education to maintain skills and certifications.
  • Assists with fire prevention and inspection programs; educates the public on fire safety.

Paramedic Duties:

  • Provides pre-hospital emergency medical care at the ALS level under protocols and medical direction.
  • Performs patient assessments, administers medications, starts IVs, performs intubation, and uses defibrillators and other medical equipment.
  • Documents patient care accurately in compliance with EMS reporting requirements.
  • Transports patients safely to appropriate medical facilities.
  • Maintains medical equipment and inventory on emergency response vehicles.

General Duties:

  • Participates in station maintenance, apparatus checks, and housekeeping duties.
  • Performs public outreach and education on fire prevention, first aid, and CPR.
  • Maintains high levels of physical fitness and readiness.
  • Completes reports and documentation promptly and accurately.
Qualifications


Firefighter/Paramedic minimum qualifications

  • Valid Missouri Paramedic License
  • Valid Drivers License in the state of residency
  • Certification of completion through the St. Louis County Fire Academy
  • Current in ACLS; BLS; PALS or Handtevy
  • Valid Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) card (Fire Academy hosting test dates are Oct 7 & 21)
