GENERAL PURPOSE / DESCRIPTION:
Recruit Firefighter participates in formal classroom and field training designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become a certified Firefighter. Work in this position is performed in both academic and practical settings under close supervision until successful completion of the department’s fire academy and probationary requirements.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This class has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Attends and successfully completes all required training sessions in fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue operations, hazardous materials awareness, and fire prevention.
· Participates in physical conditioning and manipulative drills designed to develop strength, stamina, and firefighting skills.
· Learns to operate firefighting equipment including hoses, ladders, pumps, breathing apparatus, and other tools used in emergency operations.
· Assists in responding to emergency calls under supervision to gain familiarity with field operations.
· Learns departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
· Studies fire behavior, building construction, and local geography to support emergency response readiness.
· Participates in drills, simulations, and evaluations to demonstrate skill proficiency.
· Maintains assigned equipment, apparatus, and facilities in a state of readiness.
· Performs related duties as assigned.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
· Equipment: Fire apparatus, fire suppression tools, extrication equipment, ALS medical gear, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Software: Fire records management systems, electronic patient care reporting (ePCR), and Microsoft Office Suite.
· Communication Tools: Radios, mobile data terminals (MDTs), and dispatch communication systems.
PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
· Heavy work environment.
· Continuous indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme heat or cold, extreme physical, ergonomic, and/or emotional hazardous environment.
· Work requires lifting fifty (50) pounds and occasional lifting up to one hundred and seventy-five (175) pounds, and wearing protective equipment; exposure to extreme weather, noise, hazards; requiring climbing, crawling, lying, bending, and kneeling.
· Work may be performed in confined spaces, at heights, and in unpredictable emergency environments, ambulances, healthcare facilities, and outdoor emergency settings.
· Potential exposure to infectious substances, chemicals, and airborne contaminants.
· Work involves high-stress emergency situations with frequent interruptions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of experience, education, and certification that results in successful performance of the job may be accepted. Additional experience can substitute for the lack of required education/certification on a one-for-one year basis, or vice versa.
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification as required by the Authority.
Valid CPAT by January 15, 2025.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Coursework in Fire Science, EMS, or a closely related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
· Understanding of basic principles of fire behavior, fire prevention, and emergency medical response.
· Basic knowledge of safe work practices, use of personal protective equipment, and physical fitness standards required in fire service.
· Skills in basic mathematics, reading comprehension, and mechanical aptitude.
· Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
· Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
· Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team in high-stress environments.
· Ability to maintain composure and follow protocols in highly stressful situations.
· Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions and hazardous situations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Must be eighteen (18) years or older at the time of hire.
· Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license.
· Must meet Authority insurability requirements.
· Must complete a minimum probationary period of one (1) year and meet all training requirements.
· Must complete an approved Position Task Book within one (1) year.
