GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a variety of firefighter and emergency medical services functions; assists in maintaining fire station facilities and equipment; conducts fire inspections; and performs other related duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and assists in protecting life and property within the community.
Participates in fire suppression, emergency medical service, and/or rescue activities.
Extinguishes fires in structures, vehicles, and open areas; assists in removing hazardous
conditions and providing areas of safety at emergency scenes.
Rescues and/or extricates individuals in various emergency situations; initiates patient care at scenes of accidents or medical emergencies; provides basic and/or advanced life support.
Conducts fire inspections and monitors for compliance with fire codes and safety regulations; reviews pre-fire plans submitted by commercial businesses.
Educates the public regarding fire safety and prevention, provides station tours, and/or participates in other types of public relations activities.
Assists in cleaning and maintaining fire station facilities, equipment, and apparatus; conducts equipment and/or apparatus checks.
Performs cooking and housekeeping tasks such as washing laundry and dishes as assigned.
Attends and participates in physical fitness and fire/EMS continuing education activities.
Prepares and maintains a variety of departmental records, reports, and documentation.
May drive fire apparatus and operate related equipment including pumps as required.
Performs other specialized duties as assigned or required.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience in accordance with the City's Civil Service.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Must have Basic Firefighter certification, and must have Paramedic certification or be enrolled in a Paramedic course. Candidates who do not currently have Paramedic certification must be within 3 months of eligibility to test for Paramedic certification with the State of Texas or National Registry. Selected candidates must have Paramedic certification within 6 months of hire.
Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Depending on area of assignment, may require additional specialized licenses or certifications.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
Work is performed around fire station facilities and in the field with exposure to variable weather conditions, uneven terrain, extreme temperatures, smoke, fumes, fire hazards, unstable structures, confined spaces, hazardous materials and chemicals, infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and hostile members of the public.
Subject to standing, walking, crawling, reaching, climbing ladders and stairs, lifting of objects up to 150 pounds, and equipment operation.
Must be able to pass NFACT Physical Ability Test including aerial ladder climb, wall ladder carry, hose hoist, charged hose drag, body carry, sledge hammer, and fire ground evolution drills.
