This job classification description is intended to be generic in nature and not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities.  The specific tasks/duties may vary based on position assignment and as determined by the Town of Queen Creek.

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY 

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing emergency response work in firefighting, emergency medical, and hazardous material response to protect the lives and properties of the residents of the Town of Queen Creek. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first level in the sworn fire job family responsible for performing fire prevention activities.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification.  While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.

·       Protects life and property through emergency incident response by performing firefighting and rescue incident scene activities, providing emergency medical care and transporting patients; may respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous materials, confined space rescue, extrication and technical rescue.

·       Provides community services by presenting community education and/or school-based education programs, providing emergency medical standby and public relation services at Town special events, providing a variety of non-emergency services including vehicle lockouts and smoke detector checks, and conducting commercial fire safety inspections.

·       Maintains the station, vehicles, and equipment and completes other duties by cleaning the house and grounds, ordering and utilizing cleaning and other supplies, preparing reports, processing paperwork, updating maps, and participating on teams. 

·       Provides emergency medical technician level assistance at injury or accident scenes involving basic life support functions.  

·       Participates in related training activities and instruction sessions; participates in drills and classes pertaining to medical services, fire suppression, rescue, street locations, hydraulics and fire inspections.

·       Assists in overhauling, salvage and clean-up operations.

·       Participates in health/wellness and physical conditioning programs; completes incident response reporting and data entry.

·       Exhibits a service orientation toward customers and maintains productive working relationships; works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activities and work conditions; follows and adheres to Town-wide safety policies and guidelines.

·       Performs related work as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES

Assignment to a competency rank is at the sole discretion of the Town and is based on the achievement of all of the following in combination:  education, experience, assigned duties, certification and license requirements.

If assigned to Paramedic:

·       Administers emergency medical care utilizing accepted guidelines of basic and advanced life support procedures in treating the sick and injured; examines victims and communicates physical assessment of findings to base hospital physician.

·       Operates a variety of medical equipment; completes patient encounter forms and hospital related reporting, completing incident response data entry, and finalizing various maintenance logs and request forms.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)

Education and Experience:  

High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of an approved Fire Academy. 

Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application; possess

Arizona recognized Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Successful completion of CPAT administered by an IAFF/IAFC CPAT licensee within specified period (stated at the time of recruitment). 

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

·       Driver's License;

·       EMT or Paramedic License;

·       Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.

KNOWLEDGE

·       Principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting;

·       Purpose, operation and maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment and apparatus;

·       Applicable policies, rules, and standard operating procedures;

·       Fire prevention principles and practices;

·       Emergency Medical Technician basic life support procedures and paramedic support procedures, if assigned;

·       Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities

·       Principles and practices of safe motor vehicles operation and maintenance;

·       The Town of Queen Creek street and road network and physical layout.

SKILLS

·       Solving problems and making sound decisions;

·       Using computers and related software applications;

·       Performing basic mathematical calculations;

·       Basic writing abilities to include patient encounter forms, incident reports, daily activity/shift reports, and other professional correspondence; 

·       Operation and care of fire apparatus and equipment;

·       Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
