Position Summary
The Firefighter performs a wide range of emergency response, fire suppression, rescue, EMS, and public service duties. This position requires a strong commitment to teamwork, accountability, physical fitness, and service to the community. Firefighters must be able to operate effectively under stressful, hazardous, and rapidly changing conditions while upholding the department’s values and professional standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency calls
• Perform fire suppression activities including hose advancement, ventilation, search and rescue, ladder operations, and salvage/overhaul
• Provide emergency medical care consistent with current certification level and department protocols
• Operate fire apparatus, tools, and equipment safely and effectively
• Participate in regular training, drills, and continuing education
• Maintain fire stations, apparatus, tools, and equipment in a state of readiness
• Conduct inspections, pre-plans, and public education activities
• Follow all department policies, procedures, and safety practices
• Work collaboratively with other firefighters, officers, and partner agencies
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and respect toward coworkers and the public
Minimum Qualifications
· Must hold a high school diploma or GED
· Must be a U.S. citizen
· Be at least 21 years old and not older than 40 at the time of appointment (unless enrolled in the 1977 Police & Fire Pension)
· Possess a valid Indiana driver’s license (or obtain one within 60 days of residency) with no more than 8 active points
· No felony convictions and no misdemeanor domestic violence convictions
· Must not have been dishonorably discharged from the military
· Must meet department substance use standards.
· Valid CPAT certification by the time a position is offered.
