All employees hired after 11/1/2011 must have and maintain a current EMTP license. 


Job Purpose

 

Performance of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical and rescue activities in residential, commercial, and industrial environments. Also performs hazardous material emergency response services.

Essential Job Functions (Duties include but not limited to the following)

 

1. Performs truck and passenger vehicle checks. Truck checks are performed on Fire trucks, Rescue trucks and Ambulances and include inspecting the mechanical operation of the trucks, the tools, ensuring air tanks are full, ensuring lights and sirens work, etc. Truck checks can take 12 hours to complete and are performed daily and after each call.

2. Rapidly determine geographic locations of incident locations via printed directions, computer based mapping and audible signal.

3. Drive equipment to incident location. Response time is typically 45 minutes from firehouse to location of call/emergency.

4. Respond to fire and medical emergencies. Firefighters/Paramedics typically respond to a variety of calls per 48hour shift; the number of calls varies from day to day.

5. Provide direct medical care to various patients as a licensed Paramedic and/or Care Team Member.

6. Provide physical lifting, moving, transferring and handling of patients that may be in various positions and locations that protects the patient and employee from further injury.

7. Perform rescues and operate rescue equipment, firefighting and operate firefighting equipment.

8. Operate motorized/nonmotor driven equipment including trucks, hand tools, hoses, etc.

9. May perform inspections and other prevention services including checking for code violations, become familiar with building layout, fire hydrant location, etc.

10. Perform maintenance/upkeep of equipment and facility including sweeping/mopping floors, washing trucks, etc.

11. Maintain a physical fitness level that allows for the wearing of a selfcontained breathing apparatus for extended periods of time (on and off air) without any accommodations.

12. Don (correctly apply) a selfcontained breathing apparatus and be breathing “on air” in 60 seconds.

13. Attend work and perform all essential functions dependably and reliably.

14. Perform duties of an EMTP (Paramedic) as licensed by the State of Missouri.

15. Perform duties and patient care as outlined by the District’s Medical Director and the Medical Director’s policy and procedure manual and know the limits of their education/training.

16. Perform skill competencies as a Firefighter as outlined by the National Fire Protective

Association (NFPA) Standard 1001 – Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.

17. Complete all ambulance reports, forms, and inventory sheets on a frequency basis as contained in the organizational manual. All paperwork is to be turned in according to current procedure.

18. All discrepancies, missing or malfunctioning of equipment or vehicles shall be documented and reported to the immediate supervisor.

19. While rendering patient care shall obey the orders given by the doctor or nurse at the

emergency department.

20. All disposable supplies that are used shall be replaced as expediently as possible and the patient compartment cleaned promptly, so as to render the vehicle fit for immediate response. Any supplies or equipment that cannot be immediately replaced shall be noted as left at the facility and retrieved at a later time.

21. Assist in maintaining tools, hose and all equipment in clean, working condition.

22. Perform duties as outlined in the organizational manual.

23. Follow orders of superiors.

24. Perform other duties assigned.

Qualifications



Education Requirements

 

Minimum requirements include:

 

1. Twentyone (21) years of age

2. High school diploma or equivalent

3. Valid driver’s license

4. Certified Firefighter I and II by St. Louis County Fire Academy

5. Current State of Missouri EMTP (Paramedic) license

6. Successful completion and certificate in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)*

7. Successful completion and certificate in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support – Advanced (BTLS)*

8. Successful completion and certificate in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)*

9. Knowledge of basic computer operations

 

* shall have up to 12 months to complete the course or certification upon employment.


Qualification Standards & Specialized Skill

 

1.        Ability to safely and successfully perform any/all essential job functions.

2.        Ability to meet and maintain all qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

3.        Ability to maintain reasonably regular and punctual attendance.

4.        Compliance with all personnel policies and practices.

5.         On the job training, training and certification in operation of heavy equipment, regular training and recertification required.

6.        Ability to work alone and as a team member for extended periods.

7.        Employees and employee candidates must have or obtain St. Louis County Fire Academy training and certification (Firefighter 1 and 2). The Firefighter/Paramedic must have a Paramedic license. The Firefighter/Paramedic will participate in frequent continuing education both at the department and outside continuing education courses.

 

Physical Demands (Duties may include but may not be limited to the following)

 

The physical tasks are listed by Essential Function number and were collected by direct measurement and handson trials with frontline employees. A calibrated force gauge and weight scale was utilized. Workers in this job classification do not have consistent ability to ask for assistance.

 

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Below is a representative, yet not exhaustive, list of tools and equipment used in this job. Heights can depend on the type of truck they are stored on.

 

Lifting/Handling: (may be handled from 100300 feet over uneven or even terrain or on stairs).

· Firefighters wear 33# in turnout gear + an additional 25# SCBA = adding an additional 58# to all of the following loads when transporting or using objects.

· Hose (donuts) handled from floor to rack – 1 ¾“ x 50 ft 17#, 2 ½” x 50 ft 25# (both to 66”). 5” x 100 feet handled with assist 100# (to 16”). Hotel pack 57# (and nozzle 6#) handled from 54” shelf on truck and can be handled up several flights of stairs (has been up to 11 floors on occasion).

· Motorized equipment includes PPU at 47# (handled from 45”), RAM at 28# (from 59”), Heavy Cutters at 53#, Spreaders at 53#, and Positive Pressure Fan at 66#, Circular Saw at 27# and Chain Saw at 22# (all from 31” height).

· These tools are all stored at a height of 31” as well and include: Extinguishers 31# (water), and 30# (chemical). Axe 8#, cable cutter 14#, Haligan Tool 13#, Sledgehammer 12#, Adapters 23#, Play Pipe 19#, hose clamp 15#, 5gallon buckets of absorbent 25#.

· Other tools can be stored higher (72” or higher) on the truck and include: extension ladder at 64# (with assistance), attic ladder at 10#, roof ladder at 32#, Pike Pole/hook 5#, rook hook at 5#, rescue struts at 88# (with assistance), trench panel at 85# (with assistance), Stokes Basket at 62# (with assistance), trench struts at 20#.

· The following equipment is stored at heights of about 40”: stretcher 150# (with assistance), backboard at 15#, jump bag at 22#, Life Pack at 22#, Repelling Bag at 30#.

 

Pushing/Pulling:

· Using a pike pole typically requiring a force of 35pounds or more to push up into a ceiling

structure and pull down out of a ceiling structure.

· Pulling to remove hoses from the fire truck. The typical peak force required to pull a hose from the truck at a height of near 60” varies from 60.0 to 90 pounds.

· Peak force required to pull a 2 ½” fire hose that is unrolled and on an uneven surface, in an over the shoulder posture is typically 3540 pounds.

Page 3 of 11· Independently pull (for example) a person at ground level depends or weight and responsiveness of the victim and could require up to 100 pounds.

· Open and/or close fire hydrants using a hydrant wrench requiring a peak force of 80100 pounds force will vary depending on the age of the hydrant, the condition of the hydrant as well as outdoor weather conditions.
