POSITION TITLE:     FIREFIGHTER

DEPARTMENT:        FIRE

REPORTS TO:           HOUSE OFFICER IN CHARGE

FLSA STATUS:         NON-EXEMPT

WORK SCHEDULE: 7:00AM-7:00AM 24 HOURS (48 OFF)

 

Purpose of Position:

 

The purpose of this position is to perform fire suppression and emergency medical response duties as a member of a fire and rescue team, may be called upon to assume the duties of the house officer in his or her absence.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

* Responds to various emergency situations including, but not limited to, fires, accidents, medical and rescue emergencies and hazardous materials incidents.

* Drives fire engine or ladder truck to the scene of the emergency; lays and connects attack lines, booster lines and supply lines.

* Operates pumper and checks hydrant for adequate water pressure.

* Performs search and rescue, ventilation, fire suppression and hazardous materials clean-up duties at the scene of a fire or accident.

* Responds to medical emergencies as a certified emergency medical technician and performs various duties, including administering basic first aid, checking vital signs, stabilizing victims and providing transportation to area hospital.

* Clears station sidewalks and platforms during inclement weather; may operate boat as member of a water rescue team.

* Inspects, cleans and restocks equipment, tools and supplies on vehicles and in fire station.

* Performs routine building maintenance and repair work at fire station; may perform preventative maintenance work on assigned vehicles.

* Participates in departmental training activities and programs to maintain required certifications and public safety education.

* Performs fire code inspections and fire investigations as assigned.

* Provides tours of the fire station and distributes public education materials to school and community groups and the general public.

* Provides assistance with special events, holiday functions and other city activities.

* Enters fire and emergency rescue data in personal computer; updates records and generates computer reports as needed.

* Performs other related duties as required.

* Ability to operate a personal computer, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database management or other software applications as may be necessary to perform essential job functions.

* Ability to use various tools, equipment and supplies for firefighting and rescue work including, but not limited to, radio, gas detectors, chain saws, smoke ejectors, extrication tools, hand tools and foam chemicals.

* Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and to calculate decimals, percentages and fractions; ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights and measures.

* Ability to exert heavy to extremely heavy, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing 20-50 pounds; may occasionally involve objects and materials up to and exceeding 100 pounds.

* Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery,

Vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease or pathogenic substances.

* Performance of essential functions may require life-or-death decisions based on circumstance beyond incumbent's control; decisions may affect the public and co-workers as well as incumbent.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required Performing Essential Job Functions:

 

* High school diploma or GED

* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

* Must possess and maintain the following certifications with the State of Indiana: Firefighter I and II, Emergency Medical Technician and additional certifications as may be required by the Terre Haute Fire Department.

*All Firefighters hired after January 01, 2007 must complete and become a licensed Paramedic within 5 years from their official hire date. They must maintain this certification as required by the state of Indiana EMS commission and be affiliated with the Terre Haute Fire Department's sponsoring hospital for their entire career.
