General Purpose

Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid and operations level hazardous materials duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.

 

Supervision Received

Works under the direction of the department training officers as well as all department officers.

 

Supervision Exercised

May assist to coordinate, instruct or supervise the work of part-time firefighters, part-time new recruits or other part-time personnel as assigned.

 

Essential Duties

 

It is Schererville Fire Department policy that, as a condition of employment, all Town of Schererville firefighters must be certified paramedics at the time of employment, or become so certified within twenty-four (24) months of enrollment in the Paramedic course.  In addition, firefighter employees must maintain a valid State of Indiana paramedic license and remain in good standing with the requirements outlined by the policy of the Town of Schererville sponsoring hospital throughout their employment term with the Department.  Failure to maintain said paramedic certifications shall subject the employee to disciplinary action up to and including termination.  In regards to existing firefighters (hired prior to January 1, 2018), said employees must maintain their then-existing State of Indiana certification level (either paramedic or EMT) during their entire term of employment with the Town of Schererville and their failure to maintain said existing state certification, shall subject the employee to disciplinary action up to and including termination.   

 

Respond to alarms by reporting to assigned vehicle, riding in or on an assigned vehicle to the scene of the emergency or fire.

 

Lift, carry, drag, lay and connect hose lines from hydrants and equipment to scene. Carry EMS equipment, tools and other equipment from a vehicle to a scene.

 

Raise and climb ladders, crawl and walk on floors, open holes and windows with axes, bars or other hooks for access or ventilation.

 

Combat fires by holding nozzles and directing streams of fog, chemicals or water and move into the fire area, including into confined spaces and stairs.

 

Communicate by voice or radio with other firefighters and other emergency personnel to relay observations, equipment needs and other relevant information.

 

May move citizens away from danger, including carrying unconscious or incapacitated persons by physical means.

 

Provide emergency medical treatment to the sick and injured.

 

Remove objects from structures, place protective covers over objects and monitor assigned areas for signs or recurrence.

 

Assist with fire drills. 

 

Actively participates in training classes that include firefighting, emergency medical services, Haz-Mat operations and other related subject matter.

 

Maintains department equipment and structures, which includes cleaning and washing of walls and floors, cleaning, hanging and drying of fire hose, cleaning equipment and performing preventative maintenance on motorized equipment.

 

Maintain personal physical fitness.

 

Maintain personal physical hygiene.

 

Performs firefighting activities that may include driving fire department vehicles, performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.

 

Perform salvage operations that may include the placement of salvage covers, sweeping of water and removing debris.

 

Peripheral Duties

Assists in department supervisory and administrative tasks as assigned.

 

Assists in supervising part-time members as assigned.

 

Assists in training part-time members as assigned.

 

Tools and Equipment Used

Fire suppression tools, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, emergency medical equipment, radios, pagers, personnel computers and telephone systems.

Qualifications

Certifications and Licensing (at time of offer)
  • Certified Indiana Firefighter I/II and licensed Indiana Paramedic; or
  • Certified Indiana Firefighter I/II and and Indiana EMT who must enroll in a paramedic class within one year of hire date; or
  • Licensed Indiana Paramedic who must enroll in a Firefighter I/II class within one year of hire date
Other Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age but less than 40 years of age at the date of hire to qualify for the 1977 PERF Fund
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must have a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months at the time of interview
Educational Agreements:
  • Applicants required to attend a paramedic or firefighter I/II class must sign the Firefighter Paramedic or Firefighting Licensing and Educational Agreement.
